Cartier is a jeweler and watchmaker that originally opened up shop in Paris in 1847. The French company was founded by Louis-François Cartier and remained with the Cartier family until 1964. It is now owned by the Richmond group.
Cartier is a brand chosen by the elite; the clientele includes royalty and celebrities. Some of Cartier's clients were King Edward VII from England to Grace Kelly princess of Monaco.
Cartier's first wristwatch appeared in 1904 when a friend of the family, Alberto Santos-Dumont, complained that pocket watches were not practical. Cartier then decided to design a men's wrist watch named Santos. The Santos was very well received.
In the 1920s, Cartier joined ventures with Edward Jaeger from the watch company Jaeger-LeCoultre to craft movements for the House of Cartier only. The movements for Cartier watches were made by Vacheron Constantin, Audemars-Piguet and Movado.
It was in 1972 that the expression “Les Must de Cartier” (Cartier is a must) was said for the first time by the Cartier President, Robert Hocq. This term coined inspiration for the proceeding collection and became a kind of mantra for the company.
The first burgundy leather collection was created in 1974. Now, along with being acclaimed watchmakers, the French company began to establish themselves as leather craftsman as well.
With more than 200 stores worldwide, Cartier remains to be recognized for its European elegance and regal designs.
The Trinity collection first saw the light of day in 1924 when Louis Cartier designed a ring for the iconic French poet, Jean Cocteau. It was Cartier's first simple design, at a time when the jewelry house crafted exclusively extraordinary pieces.
Although simple in design, the Trinity ring bares symbolic meaning behind it; the three different bands that make up the ring (rose gold, yellow gold & white gold) represent fidelity, friendship and love. To this day, this ring remains to be an iconic and classic piece in Cartier's collection.
The first pieces from Cartier's Love Collection were released in the summer of 1969. Aldo Cipullo was the man behind the iconic collection; his designs were modern but were inspired by ancient eras.
The inspiration for the Love Collection came from the long-standing tradition of men giving their wives chastity belts when they went away. The bracelet that Cipullo designed came in two parts and could be locked with a screw. Each bracelet came with a screwdriver to lock and unlock the bracelet. The use of the screw and the lock is intended to symbolize the fidelity in a committed relationships.
The diamond studded version along with the rings, earrings and cufflinks were introduced in 1979. A beautiful modern collection Cartier is most recognized for.
