Founded in 1921 in Florence by Guccio Gucci, Gucci is an Italian Fashion House that specializes in high-end leather goods.
Gucci first opened up shop in 1920, and was dedicated selling beautifully crafted leather goods. Gucci maintained the traditional craftsmanship and Italian traditions of working with leather, while incorporating machine stitching to support production.
Gucci and his two sons expanded the business and opened up shops in Rome, Milan & Florence. The stores offered beautifully crafted leather goods, ready–to-wear shoes and silk scarves.
During the First World War, like many other brands (Chanel for example) they started using more appropriate materials through the tougher times. Instead of designing full leather bags, they introduced their classic monogram canvas bag collection. This line only featured leather on the trims and incorporated their signature red and green band in the middle.
The company expanded in 1953 and opened offices in New York City. The brand gained popularity in the mid 50s and early 60s when the elite were seen decked out in Gucci. The 70s was the strongest era for the Italian House; the Dolce Vita aesthetic of the brand was exactly what clients wanted from fashion at that time.
The 80s were a darker era for the brand due to multiple family disputes. Sales declined significantly during this time. When Tom Ford joined in the brand in 1990 as creative director, he was able to bring Gucci back to its glory days. Ford's last collection for the Italian House in 2004 was a huge success. The pieces designed by Tom Ford for Gucci are now considered to be collector's items.
In 2005 Frida Giannini took over the creative position as head of women's wear and eventually becoming head of men's wear as well.
The House of Gucci is ranked 41 in the 100 top global brands. Gucci is a story of tradition, craftsmanship & opulence.
