Prada is an Italian fashion house that was founded in 1913 by Mario & Martino Prada. The brand opened up shop in Milan where they sold and produced crafted leather goods.
Miuccia Prada joined the company in 1970 and took over the role of creative director in 1978. She continues to hold this position today.
In 1979, Miuccia introduced the famous nylon backpack made of Pocone in an attempt to alter the image of the brand and boost sales. Due to insufficient advertising and promotion, the nylon line was not an overnight success. Overtime, the nylon line began to gain momentum and today, it is considered one of Miuccia's greatest ideas and biggest successes.
The 80's saw good commercial success and business ventures for the Italian brand. Wholesale accounts were signed and shops began popping up in cities across Europe. It was in 1985 when Miuccia released the first sophisticated ladylike handbag The Classic. With its clean lines and elegant features, it was an instant hit and to this day remains a fashion collectors must-have.
In 1989 the women's ready-to-wear collection was first introduced and immediately took the fashion world by storm. Miuccia reinvented classic silhouettes and established a look specific to the Italian house. Quirky yet classy, with a flair for opulence only an Italian designer can master.
In the 1990's the brand became to be known as a prestigious luxury powerhouse. Prada eventually merged with the LVMH group in 1999.
