In 1837, Thierry Hermès first established the French fashion house, Hermès, as a manufacturer of harnesses and bridles catered to the French bourgeoisie. Thierry Hermès' son took over the business in 1880 and moved the business to the iconic 24 rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it still remains today. Once the store began gaining momentum, Hermès began offering saddles to the upper class and soon became internationally renowned for their beautiful crafted leather saddles.
After Mr Charles-Emile's retirement his two sons took over the management of the sophisticated shop on rue Saint-Honoré and renamed the company Hermès Frères.

In 1922, the first leather handbag collection was released
The Beautiful trapeze shaped bag later named the Kelly bag (after Grace Kelly) was designed in 1935
The first silk carré was released in 1937; the pattern was called Jeu Des Omnibus Et Dames Blanches. This particular still remains a collectable to this day.
The horse carriage logo made its first appearance in the 1950s.
In 1984, Jean Louis Dumas designed a bag in supple black leather for actress, Jane Birkin which is now known as the Birkin bag
